The trial two month winter sprinkler ban ended on 31 August 2009.
The trial was jointly managed by the department and the Water Corporation at the request of the Water Minister Dr Graham Jacobs.
As announced, this trial ban was to be used to see how effective a winter sprinkler ban would be in reducing water consumption in the greater metropolitan area.

A survey conducted on behalf of the government found 93 per cent of respondents supported the trial ban.
Issues raised during its implementation will assist government planning for a future permanent ban.
To assist this feedback a Trial winter sprinkler ban summit was held on 9 September in which issues raised during the trial ban were discussed. Presentations are available here.
Both the department and the Water Corporation were happy with the compliance by the general public and relevant licensed bore users with the voluntary restrictions.
In total the department of water issued 600 education letters to non-scheme water users who breached the voluntary ban. 580 of these were in the Perth metropolitan area and 20 in the south west region.
