The water policy framework is a structure of policies that collectively provides a vision for water resources management in Western Australia.
The framework guides the state in managing water and responding to contemporary water issues.
Seven over arching objectives, designed to respond to the challenges of climate change and water scarcity and the increasing demand for water, direct the framework.
- use and recycle water wisely
- plan and manage water resources sustainably
- invest in science, innovation and education
- protect ecosystems, water quality and resources
- enhance the security of water for the environment and use
- develop water resources for a vibrant community
- deliver services for strong and healthy communities
Developments made through water reform will see the framework change and improve over time to ensure the most efficient and effective management of water, now and into the future.
The plans describe the desired outcomes to be achieved through each plan, and list the objectives, geographical areas, priorities and issues to be considered further.
Regional water plans address the water issues, challenges and opportunities of each Western Australian region. In total, nine regional plans will be developed to cover the state.
Regional plans are supported by detailed management plans to protect and share water resources and manage land-use changes.
The plans provide specific strategies to allocate water sustainably, protect drinking water sources, preserve our waterways and manage drainage and floodplains.
Developments made in water reform and legislation reform will improve the plans and elevate the strength of some plans to statutory prominence.
