The Department of Water is strengthening its role and involvement in water supply planning.
Water supply planning is about planning ahead – to responsibly develop water sources and manage our growing demand for water, while dealing with the drying climate.
Water supply planning means that our towns and new developments will have enough water.
Our role
As the state’s water resource manager, we provide technical and policy advice to government on water supply planning, at a local and state level.
We also work with water service providers, like the Water Corporation, to improve the security of water supply across our state. Particularly for areas like the Perth, Pilbara and Great Southern regions.
Our goal
Goal number 1 of our strategic plan is that water needs for population and economic growth are met now and in the future.
In water supply planning, our objective is to work with government and water service providers to:
- assist with responsible development
- improve security of supply
- provide guidance for water supply planning and developing water sources.
Our involvement in water supply planning will ensure that water demand across all water use sectors is well understood and options to manage and meet that demand are planned for and implemented in due time.
To achieve this we are...
- working with the Water Corporation to ensure the supply/demand balance for Perth’s integrated water supply scheme water is met
- working with senior officers across government to assess the best option to meet town and industrial water demand for the Pilbara
- delivering a state of the water resource report setting out water availability and quality across the state
- investigating long-term water supply options for scheme and self supply users across the state
- developing water supply strategies, in the state’s water demand hot-spots including the Pilbara, Mid-West, and Upper Collie.
