Cockburn groundwater plan area

The plan area is located 30 kilometres south of Perth and covers a coastal strip of 22 kilometres, extending approximately seven kilometres inland.  It is situated within the municipalities of the town of Kwinana, and the cities of Cockburn and Rockingham. The plan area covers about 157 km2 of the Swan coastal plain and is bounded by the Perth groundwater area to the north, Jandakot groundwater area to the east and Rockingham groundwater area to the south.

Groundwater resources in the plan area

Groundwater resources in the plan area comprise both unconfined and confined aquifers.  The aquifers are, in order of increasing depth, the Superficial aquifer, Rockingham Sand aquifer (where present), the Leederville aquifer and the Yarragadee aquifer.

The plan area is divided into four subareas to better manage the groundwater resource.  They are the Kogalup, Thompsons, Valley and Wellard subareas.

Water planning in the Cockburn area

The Cockburn groundwater area management plan was released in December 2007.

The plan includes allocation limits, which define how much water is available in the Cockburn area. The plan also includes policies for how the water resources will be allocated and managed.

Why has the department prepared a water allocation plan?

Planning is needed to ensure that the needs of the community and the environment are protected while providing users with secure water supplies.

How can I access any of the information on the Cockburn plan area that the department has produced?

We are committed to making our technical information, which is used in the planning process, available to the public.
