WA Water Campaign

Local governments can play a significant leadership role in how to reduce consumption and improve the quality of water entering Western Australian waterways.

In the Perth metropolitan area local governments use around 50 gigalitres of groundwater each year, particularly for the watering of public open spaces. In regional centres, they are the most important users of treated wastewater, with numerous schemes designed to irrigate parks and ovals.

Department of Water is helping local governments reduce water consumption and improve local water quality through the continued funding of the ICLEI Water CampaignTM in Western Australia. ICLEI was founded in 1990 as the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives and is now known as ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability. The ICLEI WaWater CampaignTM is a capacity-building program for local governments and funded in WA by the Department of Water. This performance-based milestone program provides a framework that motivates and empowers local government to work toward the sustainable management of our water resources.

The WaWater CampaignTM is a voluntary international water management program delivered by ICLEI Local Governments for Sustainability Oceania.

The program builds the capacity of councils to take action to address water quality and water conservation within their own corporate operations, and influence their community through land use planning, education, regulation and various other incentives.

The Water Campaign TM was launched in 2003 in Western Australia. To view the Western Australian member councils please click on the link below:
