Project background

The Irrigation Review Steering Group was established in April 2004, to support the State Water Strategy. The Steering Group reported to the Cabinet Sub-Committee on Water on the need to meter the water used for irrigation on the Gnangara Mound.

Cabinet approved $2 million per annum for three years for the Department of Water (formerly the Department of Environment) to develop and implement a metering program. The funding was for managing the supply, installation, maintenance and reading of meters with water entitlements between 5,000 and 500,000 kilolitres per year.

Installing meters is an indication to irrigators and the wider community of the importance the Government places on sustainable water use. It will encourage more efficient and effective water use.

The Metering Project Team trialled the supply and installation of several different types of meters under various bore / well configurations on a large horticulture property in Carabooda. The installations showed that some types of meters and installation methods were not suitable and that data collected was unreliable.
