Our role
The Swan Avon region includes the Perth Metropolitan Area and extends north to Lancelin, and east to include the Avon River Basin. The region also encompasses the Gnangara and Gingin groundwater areas, which have the State’s most diverse concentration of land use activities, rapid urban expansion and a high demand for water resources.
The region has three offices based in Victoria Park, Northam and Welshpool.
The Swan Avon region aims to ensure sustainable water use through:
- understanding our water resources
- protecting and managing high value water assets and
- engaging the community in water resource planning and management.
Victoria park (Ellam Street)
The Ellam Street office provides regional administration and strategic management. The office also delivers for the Swan Coastal Plain and Goldfields including:
- water licensing, compliance and allocation and provision of advice and requirements for water quality and land use planning
- assessment of rural drainage proposals and
- drinking water source protection.
Welshpool
The Welshpool office provides water measurement services to the entire region by:
- operation, maintenance and data management of water and weather environmental sensing equipment for a broad range of long term monitoring projects and short and medium experimental projects.
Northam
The Department of Water has retained a staff member based in the Wheatbelt NRM office at the Department of Agriculture and Food with responsibility for continuing the department’s waterways management activities in the Avon region.
Support for the officer will be from the department’s staff in the Ellam Street Victoria Park office which provides licensing, water measurement, land use planning and management support through the region including the area of the Avon catchment.
