Protecting Marbellup Brook
Released 10 Apr 2007
The Department of Water wants to hear from people who live near Marbellup Brook, Lake Manarup, Lake Powell and Torbay Inlet as part of a survey it is conducting that is aimed at preserving these values into the future.
South Coast Regional Manager, Naomi Arrowsmith said the survey would gather information about how people used these waters for recreation and tourism as well as identify any heritage, aesthetic, education and scientific values.
"The information we collect about the social value people put on these water bodies will help us better understand and protect the Marbellup Brook system," Ms Arrowsmith said.
"It will also assist us in planning for the future water requirements for the environment, landowner usage and public drinking water supply and how to maintain them.
"Information gathered by the project, funded by the South Coast Regional Initiative Planning Team, will be used in the development of a Water Allocation Plan for these areas.
"Forward planning is crucial to preserving the Marbellup Brook system for future generations.
"The Water Allocation Plan will be central to long-term planning by the Department to ensure a secure water supply for the environment and communities across the South Coast region from Walpole to Pallinup.
The survey is expected to be completed by the end of May.
