Pilbara Water Resource Assessment
Examining the influence of the Pilbara's climate on water resources
The Pilbara Water Resource Assessment provides essential science and data to support the State Government’s management of water resources to strengthen, grow and diversify the Pilbara’s economy and communities.
The study contributes to the Department of Water’s scientific programs measuring the nature, extent and potential for use of the Pilbara’s groundwater resources by new and existing industries in the region.
The three-year, $3.5 million study was prepared and funded in a partnership with CSIRO, the Department of Water, the Pilbara Development Commission, and industry partner BHP. The State Government contributed $1.5 million through Royalties for Regions, with CSIRO contributing $1.5m and BHP $0.5m.
The Assessment reviews current and future climate and water resources of the Pilbara, looking at potential for impact on the region’s water availability.
The State Government’s contribution of $1.5 million in Royalties for Regions funding comes from the $12.5 million Water for Pilbara Cities initiative through the Pilbara Development Commission.
