Urban water planning
Southern River
Through collaboration with industry, state agencies and community groups, the Department of Water prepares guidlines, strategies, and drainage and water management plans (DWMP) to manage and protect water resources in urban environments. The process defined in Better urban water management (BUWM) defines the state government planning framework and identifies where DWMPs fit in the planning process (the BUWM document - WAPC 2008 is available online)
The DWMPs inform the district planning level in the BUWM framework and assess catchment-scale water constraints and water
use and management opportunities at the pre-development stage on greenfield land which the Department of Planning has identified for priority urban development. Assessment is based on:
- surface water, including flood and inundation constraints
- groundwater behaviour
- surface water and groundwater interaction
- water quality
- climate change
- water use, reuse and efficiency.
The drainage and water management plans cover identified priority urban growth areas in the state and are currently available for the areas listed below:
The Department of Water is preparing other drainage and water management plans in areas of priority urban growth within the Perth to Peel (incl the Lower Serpentine) and the South West Regions. Please contact the Department for additional information.
Other levels of planning are covered on the Water and land use planning page.
